Air filters are devices that remove dust and other particulate matter from the air by capturing these particles on their surface. Although there are many types of air filters available, it becomes difficult to choose a suitable one for myriad choices. Such particles may be harmless or harmful and may be present in the air naturally or because of human activity. Air filters comprise a porous material through which air blows, trapping any particles in the filter.

Air filters also protect sensitive equipment, including computers, cameras, and other electronic equipment. They can improve indoor air quality significantly. Air filters are standard in HVAC systems, heating, and cooling systems in buildings to help them keep the surrounding air clean and healthy.

Air filters are available in many devices and machines, and a variety of filter types exist. That is why we will talk about the four popular types of air filters preferred by people for their homes. Let us take a look.

Popular Air Filters

Flat Air Filters

A flat air filter is a kind of air filtration system that removes second-hand smoke through a special filter. These filters come in two parts–flat and cassette. Flat air filters work by way of filtering particulates and gases. These are usually activated carbon, which is a special kind of carbon. It increases the surface area of the carbon granules, so more can be a part of an air filter for maximum purification.

Extended Media Filters

The extended media is a secondary filter media to trap all the dust particles that pass through the primary filter media. The extended media provide a much longer filter life. Typically, the extended media installation happens in the middle of a filter system. But, in some scenarios, it is installed after the primary filter media.

The extended media is of synthetic material such as polyester, polypropylene, or glass fiber. Polyester and polypropylene are standard for extended media, as they can resist higher temperatures and are thus quite durable.

Electronic Air Filters

Traditional air filters are common in homes, factories, and other places where air pollution is rising. Mechanical air filters are their other name. Such air filters are common in industries to clean the polluted air before it releases into the atmosphere. An electronic air filter specifically cleanses the air and is quite handy for people who suffer from allergies. The device is suitable for houses that have excellent ventilation.

Ultraviolet Filters

UV air filters are a relatively recent addition to the existing air filters on the market. They use UV light to kill bacterial and mold spores within the filter. This is done in much the same way that a traditional HEPA air filter uses a fan to push air through a series of filters and UV light to kill harmful microorganisms. However, we should not use ultraviolet air filters to remove allergens from the air. Allergens are too significant to be affected by UV light.

Bottomline

To conclude, air filters are a great way to improve the air quality in your home. They are also pretty affordable, so there are no excuses not to have one. They may be a little annoying to maintain, but the benefits far outweigh the costs. Although, the best way to retain them is by simply washing them with warm water.
