I set the timer and temperature and watch and check on my food. If it's too hot, I turn down the temperature and if it's not cooking fast enough, I turn it up.

I have personally experienced that the heating element in the front of the oven is not protected and extremely hot. The bottom tray is very close to the heating element and also gets very hot. I want to warn others about this negative feature of the toaster-oven.

I was disappointed with the temperature settings of the toaster-oven. It kept burning things while cooking and even on a low setting, the temperature inside went up to 400 degrees almost every time. I had to return it and buy another brand.
