About NETGEAR Orbi Whole Home Tri-Band Mesh Wi-Fi 6 System (RBK852) – Router
Overall Feedback:
98% positive
75% praised the intuitive app, but 25% struggled
The Netgear interface could use a major refresh to make it look nicer and be more intuitive.
The Orbi app works well but has an amateur design.
The local web interface has not been updated for years and it is difficult to use the mobile app with a Netgear account for setup and management.
I want remote web interface based management for my router, but the app barely has any settings. Remote management is only available through the terrible iOS app now and setting up a custom port to access the far more sane and functioning web interface has been stripped away, completely.
94% praised the coverage area, but 6% found dead spots
The Orbi system covers an area of an archer and 3 floors with no issues.
The ORBI system has exceeded my expectations in terms of coverage area for whole-home mesh Wi-Fi systems.
I need the router plus 3 satellites for good coverage throughout my house.
My mesh wifi system covers my 2800 sq. ft. house and yard.
I upgraded my system to improve coverage in my 3 story house. The access point is on the second floor and now covers the whole house with the satellite on the first floor.
I wanted a single network covering my entire home.
The WiFi coverage is amazing and reaches my pool, basement, and 200 feet driveway with no issues.
The coverage is decent. I placed the main unit at one end of the basement and the extender at the other end of the first floor. However, I am getting warnings from the camera that the Wi-Fi signals are poor.
76% liked the customizable settings, yet 24% found them limited
I used to have another manufacturer for years for its customization, but now I just want things to work fast and everywhere all the time. I don't have time to change the long preamble settings from long to short.
There is no control or customization of our network.
The mesh system determines the connection type for each device and forces it, instead of allowing customization.
88% found it easy to set up, while 12% had trouble
Setting up was the easiest I have ever encountered. I plugged it in, downloaded the app and followed the instructions. It worked first-time right out of the box.
Setting up was fairly easy, but providing more information could improve the process.
86% liked the ability to support many devices, but 14% didn't
I have connected 17 devices to it.
I upgraded from the previous generation Orbi RBK50 because my house is rapidly filling with more than 20 connected devices.
My device shows 120 devices, out of which 100 are the same device with a different address.
I overloaded the ax4200 which can handle 40 devices, indicating its limitations on device support.
91% appreciated the performance
In the Orbi app, I am meeting or exceeding the top-end speed of my internet service.
After switching to Orbi mesh wifi system, I experienced a significant improvement in internet speed. I was getting 1.1gb to the router directly, and speeds of 700-950mbps via wifi. Even from my car, I was getting 550mbps speeds, which was a huge improvement from my previous router that was only giving me 10-25mbps.
I am paying for 1 Gb wired speed on the router, which is what I measured.
I have not experienced any performance issues due to high traffic yet.
88% were impressed with the security features, although 12% weren't
This mesh wifi system allows me to block specific devices, like my kids' devices, from accessing the internet after a designated time.
I put the system into AP only mode to use a more advanced router for managing security and features on my network.
The security features of the Orbi system can be frustrating. I had an authentication issue with the Armor/bitdefender service.
The main security features of our unit are tied to a subscription service.
I am dissatisfied with the security features of the product. Netgear has downgraded the UI and placed all the previous features behind a paywall. I have personally faced this problem and based on my experience, I can say that the product's security features are not up to the mark.
If I hadn't lost a security feature with the upgrade, I would have given 5 stars.
I am dissatisfied with the remote app as it is a waste of time and lacks necessary tools and features.
