It's a great idea for anyone who knits or crochets, it's so time consuming and the balls always have a mind of their own, I would give it 100 stars.
It's not the quietest thing in the world, but it's quiet enough that I ended up winding 3 skeins on my first go, something which would have taken me about 2 hours to do before.
I don't take the time to ball it before I start because I don't have time to sit and crochet, and this yarn winder is so easy that it can do the job in just a few moments.
It would be good to purchase a couple of rubber washers to keep the bearings in place as the latter implements are inverted upon set-up, as the washers cushion sharp edges in even little toddlers are about at home.
My solution was to use a rubber piece to grip the knitting needles as I tightened them onto the cables.
Question & Answers
Is it possible to combain two or more strings of yarn with this?
It can't be used for that, it's used to make yarn cakes out of skeins or hanks.
I don't know if Oz will work with 400 yds yarn.
It depends on the type of yarn and how big it is. For lace weight yarn, 400 yds is a little less than 2 ounces and for DK yarn, it should be handled by this winder.
What is the diameter of the yarn's wind section?
The base's diameter is 4 1/2 inches and the cylinder's diameter is 1 inch.
There are two different sizes of rubber tips that came free with the winder.
The rubber tips are placed at the ends of your knitting needles to keep the yarn from falling off.
Is there a handle option for this? It should be used handheld, meaning is it possible to carry it with you?
There is a clamp (see green triangle on long screw under the winder in the photo) that secures the winder to a table or counter.
