About Canson XL Series Watercolor Paper
Overall Feedback:
80% positive
70% found the perfect tooth and absorbency, while 30% had issues with paper buckling
I found the paper to have the required water absorption capabilities and work almost as well as Arches or Fabriano watercolor papers.
The paper absorbs water too fast and too slow.
The paper buckles and does not absorb water.
The paper buckles easily with just a bit of water and does not absorb water quickly, causing water to pool in the dips of the buckling.
68% appreciated minimal bleed and feathering, but 32% experienced excessive spreading
I tested the swatches and found very little pilling despite using a lot of water, indicating that the watercolor paper has low bleed and feathering.
I have found that the paper is not suitable for wet-on-wet technique, even with various saturations and strengths of paint, it buckles, puddles, pimpls, and dimples.
The paper's sizing is problematic as it quickly and unevenly absorbs moisture, making wet in wet painting challenging.
81% liked the size and thickness, while 19% found it too thin
I wish the page size after removing it from the book was 8x10.
As soon as I wetted the paper for stretching, it began to fall apart.
66% praised the smooth surface texture, but 34% found it too rough
The surface texture of the watercolor paper is smooth, making it difficult to build up dark layers and requiring a slower approach. It took an extra layer or two to achieve the same opacity as other paper.
I compared the texture of the paper to construction paper.
The paper has no texture and does not hold water.
When water is applied, the surface dries very fast and blooms form too easily.
In this sketchbook, watercolor paper does not ghost or bleed. Although, the pages warp slightly, but it becomes minimal if closed after drying and something heavy is placed on top of it.
The surface texture of the watercolor paper is smooth and paint goes on well.
