I have not used cross bars, only stock rails. Initially, I packed a half-filled large canvas suitcase and three carry-on size bags (two duffle and one hardshell). Even with all of that, there was still enough space for two or three more carry-on size duffle bags (duffle because hardshells don't flex).

I have been using this product for seven years and have driven across the West just about every one of those summers, for over 20,000 miles. It has held up well in 100 heat and 80 MPH (USUALLY) speeds.
While going 80mph on the freeway, the flimsy plastic clip buckles came off, indicating that the product is not durable enough.
Upon inspection after using the product, I found that the pillow, front of the suitcase, and duffle were wet. I checked all the seams as best I could but could not find a tear.
