I had a bad experience sanding the wood by hand to see if it would take the stain better. The result was uneven color with poor quality.
Out of the 200 balls purchased, about 80% were not actually round and instead lumpy or blob-like. Additionally, many had rough grain patches that make them not ideal for staining.
