For most breads, the best setting is level 2.
I put the first toast one level higher and then lowered it to match the same browning.
The first time I ran the toaster, it smelled like plastic melting inside. This could be related to the adjustable browning settings.
I took off one star for the timer dial settings. I set it at 3 and it is perfect for my bread and liking. I can't imagine using settings 7, 8, 9 and wish the settings were closer between the lower settings but that's being pretty picky.
