About Onkyo TX-NR696 Home Audio Smart Audio and Video Receiver
Overall Feedback:
76% positive
81% were impressed with the power output, but 19% weren't
The Onkyo model doesn't like being shutdown by a blackout, even though it goes through a top-rated surge protector. The power loss doesn't affect the unit's performance, but it does require resetting to factory settings to pass audio signals again.
The receiver works fine with devices like Apple TV or a blu-ray player, but I need to turn up the volume pretty loud to see its capability.
81% were impressed with the multi-room capability
I ordered the NR696 because of great reviews and it has a Zone 2 that now plays inputs for 3 HDMI sources. My old Onkyo could only send analog signals to Zone 2.
67% were satisfied with the connectivity options, but 33% weren't
I appreciate the Onkyo iPhone/iPad app's ability to select Zone 1 or 2, customize names and picture IDs, and play any music source inside or outside.
NET functions like TuneIn and Pandora require a connection to ONKYO.COM to work. It's not a direct connection from the receiver to these services.
65% found it compatible.
I had an older Onkyo receiver that struggled to handle HDMI communications with my devices. I ordered the NR696 because of great reviews and it has a Zone 2 that now plays inputs for 3 HDMI sources.
66% were satisfied with the build quality and durability
After listening to loud music for a long time, the receiver did not heat up or shut off to protection mode.
The Onkyo model doesn't like being shutdown by a blackout, even though it goes through a top-rated surge protector. The power loss doesn't affect the unit's performance, but it does require resetting to factory settings to pass audio signals again.
I am frustrated with the user interface of the stereo-receiver. It should be a no-brainer plug and play, but instead, it seems designed to force paying their professionals to do it for you.
I am disappointed with the sound quality of the stereo-receiver. It sounds weak and boring compared to my 40W NAD from the 80s which sounds 5x more powerful.
I found the setup of the stereo-receiver easy and appreciated the speaker outputs accepting banana plugs, the subwoofer output, and labeled RCA inputs.
