On my iPhone, the phone app works perfectly and offers features not available on the remote.
I have to point the remote at the wall unit, just like my TV and everything else that has a remote. It's a minor inconvenience.

I found the tape wrap that comes with the kit to be woefully inadequate. I ran out of tape with several feet left to go and even with the tape, the lines appeared unfinished and poorly protected from the elements. Based on my experience, I would say that the maintenance requirements of split-system-air-conditioners are a negative aspect.
