I found the sketchbook's cover material to be sturdy like a hardcover library book. The paper is robust at 98 pounds and stands up to scrubby erasing and washes. The spiral binding allows for choosing landscape or portrait orientation, and the sketchbook does not flop closed. Additionally, the paper is acid-free and the spiral binding is well-made.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that the sketch pad had hardback with thick and good quality paper, despite expecting it to be paperback and flimsy.
On the sketchbook, charcoal looked great, but the paper started coming apart a little bit when using watercolor.
