About Sony ICF-506 Analog Tuning Portable FM/AM Radio
Overall Feedback:
88% positive
84% were impressed with the portability
I appreciate the well-designed fold-down handle and unique indentation on the back of the radio, which makes it easy to carry when the handle is folded down.
The radio has a nice flip-up carry handle and its size provides maximum portability and sound, as mentioned by the reviewer.
74% liked the frequency range, but 26% didn't
I have found that the radio nulls out adjacent signals quite well and does a good job of receiving distant AM stations by turning it.
The selectivity of the radio is not great and it prevents me from hearing weaker distant stations which are close in frequency to more powerful local stations.
I compared the sound of two radios in mono mode and found that Sony has lack of dynamic range despite having bigger speaker size.
88% were satisfied with display and controls, whereas 12% weren't
I am pleased to have a radio with simple two-knob control instead of complicated electronic devices made today.
The radio has analog tuning, legible typography, obvious controls, intuitive swing out handle, and a beautiful design.
My brother has advanced dementia and can only operate the most basic of buttons, knobs, and controls.
I dislike the fake analog idea and am not willing to compromise on smoother analog tuning and lower battery life.
76% found connectivity options easy
Image rejection at 800 kHz either side of a strong signal is reasonably good, unlike the ICF 703 and 704 where it's a major problem on signals above 65dB on FM.
94% appreciated the audio quality, however 6% were dissatisfied
The radio produces fine sound quality on both AM and FM band. The amplifier and speaker are optimized for music reproduction.
The AM sound quality is good, but the automatic gain control is poor. Medium to weak signals are not pulled in well.
The audio quality is pretty good with clear and crisp mid and high tones and clear lows for vocals. However, the bass doesn't have any force behind it. It's also worth noting that the radio is not meant to be blasted.
The audio quality of the Sony radio is not good. It sounds like an old 50s radio and it is hard to hear what is being said at normal listening volume.
I appreciate the well-designed fold-down handle and unique indentation on the back of the radio, which makes it easy to carry when the handle is folded down.
I have used the radio and found that it has AM, FM, and WB frequency range. I was able to tune in to the weather band with some effort and caught a signal.
The controls/wheels/sliders are not smooth and the dial for changing stations is very rough. It is immensely difficult and often impossible to pinpoint an exact station because it requires a smooth scroll to keep it in that exact spot without hitting the next station up or down. The control slider for the AM/FM is also rough and getting stuck every time I slide it.
