About Midland - WR400, Deluxe NOAA Emergency Weather Alert Radio
Overall Feedback:
81% positive
71% liked the frequency range, but 29% didn't
I contacted Midland and found out that the unit does not respond to the 1050hz tone, but to the SAME data burst.
I suggest that Midland could improve the radio's performance by using a more sensitive receiver or a better antenna tuned for the VHF frequency spectrum.
74% were satisfied with display and controls, whereas 26% weren't
The volume control knob controls both the volume of weather broadcasts and reception of display alerts.
The unit has a display dimming feature with a single button controlling two levels: Bright and Dim.
The display is very bright and lights up the whole bedroom. It also beeps loudly with every button press.
The display is difficult to read at night and the controls for alarm setting and weather broadcasts are confusing.
71% found connectivity options easy
The radio is sold in accessibility catalogs due to its alerting connectivity to accessories, making it more accessible for the deaf/hard of hearing.
62% appreciated the antenna length and design, while 38% struggled
The external antenna jack is definitely a plus, especially when using the radio inside a vehicle or in a fringe area.
The radio has a built-in, telescoping antenna that provides good reception of the local N.W.S. transmitter.
The radio has a good extendable antenna that works well even when not fully extended.
I feel that Midland could have improved the radio's performance by using a better antenna specifically tuned for the VHF frequency spectrum it is designed to receive.
Beside my bed, the telescoping antenna is problematic as it starts poking into lamps and such.
71% appreciated the audio quality, however 29% were dissatisfied
I rated the sound quality as high and the beeps for low station reception or going through the menu are nice and loud.
The audio quality is excellent and local FM stations and weather station come in very clear.
I use the radio to wake up in the morning and don't fret over the sound quality. I didn't notice any difference in sound quality than from my original desk radio.
The radio has an external antenna option for users in signal-blocking buildings or remote locations. It also has an external alert connection for disability assistance or building alarm system integration.
I noticed that the radio has 2 USB ports, one is input port meant to charge the Li-ion battery and the other is output port to provide power to a cell phone.
