After sanding and adding one more layer of gesso, my pre-stretched canvas became perfect and as good as other brands I have paid 5 times more for.
I find pre-stretched canvas easier to work with than cotton canvases. The smoother surface is more conducive to detail.
I noticed that the pre-stretched canvas has a fine weave that is perfect for portrait work with just enough tooth to hold the paint without being too slippery/smeary.
