Podcast Outline

A

Apurv : It is my pleasure to introduce Tim McCarthy, author of "Raising Four-Dimensional Children in a Two-Dimensional World," a parenting book offering a unique understanding of child development and practical activities for growth. Thank you so much for joining us today, Tim.

T

Tim : Thank you for inviting me. Happy to be here.

A

Apurv : So, what inspired you to write "Raising Four-Dimensional Children in a Two-Dimensional World"?

T

Tim: In addition to being a lifelong educator and a martial artist, I had the fortune to work for a company that advised other martial arts schools. We helped popularize after-school martial arts and summer camp programs in the US and Canada. I took my educational background to help develop them. Now that I'm retired, I wanted to bring that knowledge to the average parent and make it readily available to them.

A

Apurv : Can you explain what you mean by the four dimensions of human potential and why they are important in child development?

T

Tim: Back to the martial arts, you want to develop physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Parents need to take into account all four dimensions to raise their children in a balanced way.

A

Apurv : What makes your book different from other parenting books on the market?

T

Tim: Well, first of all, many people don't understand that there are four dimensions to raising children. If you don't understand it, you can't really address it. But in addition to that, I give over 400 activities. So, I don't just give you theory. I've researched what the brain is capable of and not capable of at each age, and then I give you activities to help your child move along and move up to the next level.

A

Apurv: What are some of the most common parenting misconceptions you aim to dispel in your book?

T

Tim: I think the most common one is the binary choice of being like your parents or doing the opposite. I don't think that's right. If you want to be a better dancer, you take dance lessons. If you want to be better at math, you go to math classes. What I've tried to do is distill for parents in a 300-page book the basics of everything you need to know to be a good parent based on research and based on my experience of activities to help children be better educated in each dimension.

A

Apurv : How can parents better understand and cater to their child's emotional needs?

T

Tim: There are four steps to emotional intelligence. The first is knowing your emotions. Second is being able to manage your emotions. Third is learning to motivate yourself. Fourth is recognizing emotions in others. Finally, handling relationships, which by the time we get to teenage years, becomes leadership training.

A

Apurv : Can you share some examples of the educational activities you offer in the book for children's growth and development?

T

Tim: One of the basics is playing Simon Says, which is a great activity to learn to inhibit response. I also include a game called Freeze, which helps children understand how to inhibit immediate emotional responses.

A

Apurv : Wow, that's really impressive. It sounds like you cover a lot of ground in your book.

T

Tim: Yes, I tried to make it comprehensive and practical so that parents can use it as a resource to help their children grow and develop in all dimensions.

A

Apurv : That's great. Well, thank you so much for joining us today, Tim. It was really interesting to hear about your book and your approach to parenting.

T

Tim: Thank you for having me. It was a pleasure to be here and share my knowledge and experience.
