Apurv: In this episode, we have Sylvia Andrea, the founder of MacroLife Naturals, a woman-owned company that created the superfood category over 25 years ago. JR: So, what inspired you to start MacroLife Naturals, and what were some of the challenges that you faced during the early stages of the company's development?

S

Sylvia: That is my favorite story. I created Macro Greens in 1998 to help my son recover his health and lose 65 pounds in six months. I was always in the health business, and I couldn't understand how my son had become obese. It wasn't because of lack of exercise; he was actually ranked in the state of California for 10. But he looked more like a linebacker than a tennis player. It was all that extra exercise that was depleting his body of essential nutrients and causing too much acidity in his body. That's why his food cravings were off the chart. I knew that if I could control those food cravings, he might have a chance to manage his weight better. That's exactly what Macro Greens did.

Apurv : So, how has MacroLife Naturals evolved over the years, and what are some of the key milestones that the company has achieved?

S

Sylvia: We are now known as a legacy brand and celebrating 25 years of being in the natural industry. We're one of the most popular superfoods on the market in America, and we're very proud of that. Through the years, we've launched many line extensions, such as Miracle Reds, a wide-spectrum antioxidant that also has plant sterols to help correct lower cholesterol levels. We've also launched the kids' superfood, Macro Meals, which is a high protein plus superfood, so it's not just your meat and potatoes but also your vegetables and greens, making it a complete meal. We recently launched the Macro Pet line, so we just stay busy, developing new products and launches, and staying current with the industry.

JR: What makes MacroLife Naturals superfoods and protein powders stand out from other products in the market, and how are they made?

S

Sylvia: Many of the ingredients are freeze-dried, or they are, for example, the Macro Greens uses certified organic barley grass juice powder. Many of the other products just use a grass powder, and the big difference is you have to juice it first, then it's cold sprayed onto screens and then dried at a low temperature, and that powder is what we use. That powder now contains the vital nutrients, enzymes, cofactors, and everything that your body needs to utilize those ingredients. Many of the other formulas use just a ground powder, which means it's got stems, leaves, everything, and sometimes even a little bit of dirt. That's why some of the green powders taste kind of dirty. But we use juice powders, which are more expensive but more efficacious and have much more nutrient density.

Apurv : Can you talk more about Macro Pets, the company's newest product, and how it supports the Whole Health of pets?

Sylvia: Yes, we are very pleased to provide this product. It is an all-in-one dog and cat multivitamin, utilizing barley grass for digestion and vitamins, four billion probiotics for gut and immune health, spirulina, spinach, pumpkin, which provide antioxidants and vitamins for the skin and heart

Apurv : Absolutely. And I think it's really interesting to hear Sylvia's story about how she created Macro Greens to help her son regain his health and manage his weight. Sylvia: Yes, that's definitely true. I'm very proud of the company's evolution over the past 25 years and all of the new products we've launched, including Macro Meals and Macro Pets. And as I mentioned earlier, we're always staying current with the industry and developing new products to address specific nutritional gaps and concerns.

Apurv : That's great to hear. So, can you talk a bit more about the research and scientific evidence that supports the efficacy of your products?

S

Sylvia: Sure. We're very committed to using evidence-based ingredients and making sure our products are backed by science. For example, many of our ingredients are freeze-dried or juiced to preserve their nutrient density, and we use certified organic ingredients whenever possible. We also work with experts in the industry to make sure our products are efficacious and addressing specific nutritional needs.
