I use a wire twist to hold bait near the pedal release to drop door as the trigger mechanism of the trap is a bit tricky.
The spring and locking mechanism of the trap is so weak that the rats/mice can push the trap door back open after it has been sprung.

It takes a bit of pressure to set it off, but just touching the release mechanism with the rod seems to work well.

I suggest putting a small amount of peanut butter at the back of the bait plate so that the rodent has to step on it to get to the bait.

I consistently find the bait gone and the trap untripped.
