The sides are rigid and resilient but require some maintenance to keep them working. After the handles broke a couple of times, I found that the screws come loose after routine use. However, it is a simple fix - just reinsert the screw and retighten them every once in a while.
I have owned this luggage set for over 5 years and taken it on numerous domestic and international trips. Despite being beaten and brutalized, it is still my go-to luggage set.
