I was able to start my van as soon as I connected the jump starter clamps, which were clearly marked with (+ -).
I connected the battery starter to the dead battery and the car started on the first try.

The jump-starter is small, light, and can be stored in the glovebox. It has good safety features and fast charging with a new USB input.
