I attached the fan to a joist and added support to avoid rattling.
I suggest mounting the unit by measuring it, cutting to size, and hanging it from above via tabs on the side onto 4 screws put 3/4 way into the joist.
I had to install the fan where a pre-existing fan was and cut a bigger hole and make braces for the new fan to mount. It wasn't too bad.
