If we mount the fan securely into a joist and install a 2x4 wood or metal support to hold the metal housing in the ceiling, and properly secure the drywall with screws, then the exhaust fan will have only 1.0 sones noise.
I had to modify the mounting options for a fit of this larger, higher-volume model.
The installation was more difficult than it needed to be. The mounting box only accepts mounting on one side and the electric connection is fixed to one corner. I had to drill holes in the box to mount to a joist on the other side of the box.
