I found that the package comes with two sizes of coverplate and the small one was sufficient to cover the old paint and mounting holes. I suggest ordering this along with the smart thermostat if someone is in doubt about what lies under their old thermostat. This way, they can avoid the hassle of ordering it later and going through the installation process again.
The large size plate included in the package worked perfectly to cover the unpainted portion of the wall during installation.
I installed the plates which covered up wall imperfections and holes while providing a nice look to the install. It was an easy 20 minute job and I had the C-wire hooked up about a year ago on my HVAC system by an electrician.
