I usually just use the hair guides on the newer model, but it does have a fine adjustment for the blade depth which I think is nice and works fine, but not necessary for me.
The screw on the side of the clippers is not a screw, but an adjustment for the motor power. This can help reduce noise while using the hair-cutting kit.

I adjusted the screw so that the clippers were about as loud as my old pair and they started cutting like they were supposed to.

The noise level of the trimmer is not like the normal hum, it's a definite rattle.
The new razor is uncomfortable to use around the ears because it is so loud.
