I found a hint on the internet that suggested putting one brick into an empty 5 gallon bucket and adding about a gallon of water, then waiting for a couple of hours. It worked for me and I was amazed that it was so fluffy and easy to work with.
I suggest mixing in perlite or vermiculite to improve drainage as this soil retains too much water and can smother seedlings.
