The hoops are made of thick wooden and have a strong screw closure that can be used to tighten them, but there is a screwdriver slot that can be used if you need to tighten them for a display hoop.
I always look for economical hoops to do Christmas crafts, and when I saw this on Amazon, I immediately ordered them, they look good and are well-made.
I will probably throw one in my bag in case I have to grab it, but I won't use them for that as I have hoops that I use for the actual embroidery.
The tension for that is supplied by the 12 hoops, none of which were broken. I can leave one in my travel bag, one at work, and some throughout the house.
Even though I have them tied tightly, I can feel the hoops lose their grip on the fabric when doing the embroidery, so I would definitely pick for as many as you can and the price.
