About TP-Link 16 Port Gigabit Ethernet Network Switch, Desktop/ Wall-Mount, Fanless, Sturdy Metal w/ Shielded Ports
Overall Feedback:
91% positive
84% liked its broad compatibility
To fully utilize the speeds of the switch, I need 2.5gbps compatible connectors.
I have connected both of my Asus ZenWiFi Pro (XT12) routers to this switch for a full 2.5Gbps ethernet backhaul between the two as it is compatible with my entire home LAN.
After integrating this switch with the Omada ecosystem TP-Link has created, my network is running great and I have one central point to administer it from.
75% praised for its redundant fan design, while 25% experienced fan failure issues
After a year, the switch started acting up and would stop passing traffic after some indeterminate amount of time. Power cycling would fix it.
I noticed that the switch failed without any indication on the LED lights and all connections were lost.
83% praised for its easy management features, while 17% found it complicated to set up
I like the indicator lights on the switch that clearly show the speed of the device connected.
The switch has good collision management and its throughput is comparable with competitor brands.
I prefer this product because it has both local web-based administration and an app, unlike many new systems that only have an app and seem more controlled by the makers than by the purchasers.
I am not sure what the TP Link unmanaged 16 port switch is doing to the ethernet frames being sent between the Bell HH3000 and the VIP 2262. However, the trouble symptoms are consistent with reports I have read about problems with handling IGMP properly for IP Mulicasting for IP TV.
95% liked the flexible mounting options, but 5% found it difficult to install
The switch comes with pad feet stickers and mounting holes in the back, providing multiple mounting options.
This unit is not rack mountable and has no provisions for rack mounting, which is typically expected from a 16 port switch.
I wanted to mount the switch vertically on the wall with ports to my left, but the bottom slots do not allow that orientation.
94% praised for its fast network speeds, while 6% experienced slow connectivity
To fully utilize the speeds, I need 2.5gbps compatible connectors.
I was concerned that the Cat 5E cabling may not support 10Gbps but it was not an issue.
I am getting a consistent speed of 1.19Gbps with 10ms latency at the farthest end of the LAN from the modem, which shows my positive sentiment towards the network speed of the switch.
The switch works well with 10GB link to home server and 2.5GB links to gaming PCs, and auto-negotiates the correct speeds.
I noticed a discrepancy in the transfer rates and found out that the switch only supports 500mbits, not 1gbit throughput.
96% liked the quiet operation, but 4% found it too loud
I have installed the switch in my basement and it feeds the rest of the house.
The switch worked fine for a year, but then it started acting up. It would show all the right lights, but after some time, it would stop passing traffic. Power cycling would fix it.
85% liked the ample port count
I have been using an 8 port switch for a long time and juggling cords around. I upgraded to this switch and am very happy with it.
87% appreciated the durable construction, while 13% noticed flimsy parts
The product has great quality and the build is definitely not cheap.
This switch is a genuine 10gbe switch for every port and made with quality, reliable hardware.
I dislike the placement of the Ethernet connectors and the power input on opposite sides, which makes it difficult to manage cables and install the switch in a clean manner.
70% appreciated the robust security features, while 30% found them inadequate
The switch has a nice feature where the amber lights only operate when slower attached devices are connected.
I'm not sure what the TP Link unmanaged 16 port switch is doing to the ethernet frames being sent between the Bell HH3000 and the VIP 2262. The trouble symptoms are consistent with reports I've read about problems with handling IGMP properly for IP Mulicasting for IP TV.
I tested the compatibility of the switch by setting a port to vlan 8 and another port on standard vlan 1 untagged and both devices could ping each other.
The switch has been compatible with all my devices including a Windows PC, an IP phone, and an old Macbook Pro.
