Helping children develop healthy habits to care for their teeth while they are young is important. Teeth are one of the most sensitive yet strong parts of our body and proper maintenance is required to ensure a cavity-free life. A proper dental kit can help your kids provide the much-needed care to their teeth and condition them for a better oral care regime. This way they can avoid many problems that result from poor oral health, including gum disease, cavities, and tooth decay.
Tooth decay or cavity
Tooth decay is the condition where the plaque accumulates and sticks on the surface of the teeth. This plague contains acid that wears away the enamel over time and often results in toothache, decay, and cavities.
Sensitivity is often caused if you have worn enamel, or nerves that are exposed due to enamel tear. This is often marked by severe pain flashes. This happens the most if you try to have something too hot or too cold.
Gingivitis marks the onset of gum diseases and can be identified by the red, inflamed gums. Sometimes such gums tend to bleed too while brushes or flosses.
Gum disease or periodontitis is another very common oral problem that kids have because of poor oral hygiene. It is a severe form of gum infection that attacks the soft tissues. If left unchecked, it can also attack the bones supporting the teeth.
Eat Healthy Food
Avoiding sugary drinks and food not only helps overall health but can also reduce the chances of serious cavities. When sugar is allowed to sit on your teeth frequently, it can create decay, thus ruining your teeth.
Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss regularly. Set a timer while brushing, so that sufficient time can be given for the toothpaste to kick in their action. You can use a tartar dye if desired to be sure all the teeth surfaces are reached and that brushing has happened long enough. Such practices are found to be effective at removing plaque.
For the healthy teeth of your kids, talk to your dentist about the option of having your child’s teeth sealed. Sealants can help prevent cavities and resulting fillings.
Oral Germ Spreading
Avoid sharing utensils, sippy cups, bottles, pacifiers or other items with your kids or allow them to be shared with others. Bacteria in our mouths can be passed to each other and isn’t healthy. Be sure to sanitize all items that may be in your baby’s mouth to prevent bacterial infections such as thrush.
Encourage with Rewards
Let kids choose their own toothbrush (within reason) and consider a goal chart to track their progress on a goal that leads to a reward such as going to a movie, or taking a trip to the toy store.
No matter their age, your children's toothbrushes should fit comfortably in their mouths and be easy to hold and manipulate. They should also have soft bristles with round-ended edges. This ensures that your kid's jaws and gums are protected, in case of vigorous brushing.
Use a fluoride-containing toothpaste as fluoride helps in remineralizing the enamel and helping in rebuilding any damaged tooth. However, such toothpaste should carry the ADA's seal of acceptance. Additionally, young kids should use very less amount of fluoride as otherwise, it may harm their enamel.
To make flossing easier, buy some children’s dental floss picks. They have smaller pre-strung floss spread on a plastic handle and is quite easy to hold.
Choose a timer that runs for approximately 2 minutes and can help children to develop a good oral health routine. You can choose for your child, timers in different colors. Sand timers or smiley-faced timers are quite popular as they help in keeping the kids distracted while brushing. This way they don't keep a track of time and effectively finish off brushing that lasts 2 minutes.
When making important decisions about your children’s health and well-being, don’t forget about their teeth and gums. Nowadays, only the best products are offered to kids and special attention to their delicate teeth and gums is a must. Compared to kids with poor oral health, children who establish good oral hygiene habits at a young age are more likely to have better gums, stronger teeth, and a good confidence level.
