Before the first use, it is suggested to make a big fire in the grill to heat up the grate and burn off the protective coating. This will avoid any residue or food contamination. After the fire, give it a good scrub with a wire brush or grill brush to take off any residue.
I have personally faced the problem of the black coating on the grate peeling off like paint and bubbling up in other places while using the grill.
I wish the grill had another cutout for the grill to go lower and be removable for easy cleaning.
