On my iPhone8, the Defender is fairly rugged and my phone has survived several falls from waist high.
The Otterbox Defender has protected my phone from small falls without any damage to the case or the phone.
I have been using Outerbox defenders for years and like the added protection it provides. I never buy optional insurance and never broke a screen.
I compared the Defender for iPhone8 and iPhone13. The Defender for iPhone8 has a clear screen protector integrated into the front panel, but the unit for iPhone13 does not. I will need to get a separate screen protector which will fit within the case.
