I have different suction settings on my canister vacuum cleaner that affect the noise level. I usually run it on the medium setting, which is quite powerful and relatively quiet. The quiet setting is even more quiet, but reduces the suction a bit too much for carpet vacuuming.
The vacuum I own is not noisy compared to others I have owned. The noise level increases as the power level increases but it is not offensive.
