I suspect that the manufacturing quality is poor and it degrades over time, causing it to fail to work as intended.
I compared the build quality of this can opener with my previous one and found it to be flimsy and low quality.
I compared the quality of the old and new can-openers. The old one was heavy and could cut through tins easily, even tins with pull loops which broke. However, the new one is not as good as the old one and the quality has gone down.
I marked down the can opener to 4 stars because it does not feel as solidly built as my previous version.

The tin opener cuts below the rim of the lid instead of within it.
I tried using the can opener both upside down and right way up, but it was unable to pierce the tin of dog food where the loop had broken. The tin was quite thick and had quite a deep recessed, but I expect a tin opener to be able to handle such tins.
I have noticed that the Magic Can opener cuts further down the side of the can compared to the Safety Can opener, resulting in the removal of the crimp lip at the top of the can from the body of the can, weakening the sides of the can and causing a mess.
