About Katadyn Hiker Microfilter
Overall Feedback:
77% positive
81% praised for its long-lasting durability, while 19% experienced a shorter lifespan
The case and pump of the filter have lasted me for 2 decades despite being hard on boots and gadgets.
I was disappointed with the durability of the product as the palm grip of the handle cracked off clean at the top of the pump shaft. The manufacturer should improve the design to prevent this issue from occurring again.
The filter only lasts for about 4 days of regular use.
Both units failed at the same point due to a poorly designed discharge connection that easily breaks when disconnecting the discharge tube. It cannot be repaired in the field, rendering it useless in the wilderness.
If the filter had failed while on a hike, especially in an area with questionable water quality, it would be very disappointing.

The cost and frequency of replacement filters make the pump useless.
The discharge connection easily breaks when disconnecting the discharge tube.
I believe the product is a weak link in the chain.
84% appreciated its easy cleaning, while 16% found it high maintenance
I love this product and after cleaning the water, it is crystal clear.
A pre-filter like a coffee filter or bandana helps keep sediment away from the intake in shallow waterways.
I love this product! The water is crystal clear after cleaning/pumping through the filter, which proves that it's easy to clean and works well.
I need to constantly clean the ceramic filter of MSR and it can break easily if dropped.
I had some problems with the filter getting clogged and had to clean it per manufacturers instructions. I also had to rinse it in a light bleach dilute for long term storage and have been slightly disappointed to have to field clean it twice on separate trips since then.
I need to constantly clean the ceramic filter of the MSR and it can break easily if dropped.
The prefilter system of the filter clogs easily and pumping becomes difficult even after cleaning both filters.
70% found it easy to using, while 30% had difficulties
This water filter is easy to use and dependable with common sense.
The filter is small and easy to store.
The filter is compact, lightweight and easy to use. Plus, the water tastes amazing.
This is my go-to water filter because it is easy to use and dependable with common sense.
I found it relatively easy to use, but had some issues with the filter getting clogged.
I found that the filter got clogged while using it, but it was fairly easy to use.
The prefilter system clogs easily even in the sierras.
79% appreciated its effectiveness, but 21% questioned its effectiveness
I found the filter effective while hiking the AT due to its design.
I emphasized the importance of maintenance for a long filter life.
Both units failed at the same point due to a poorly designed discharge connection which easily breaks when disconnecting the discharge tube. It's useless in the wilderness as there is no field repair possible.

77% liked its lightweight and compact design, but 23% found it bulky
The Katadyn Hiker is a superior filter and pump.
I had a Katadyn Vario which I loved on its only trip, but it was bulky and made me nervous about its fragility.
I found it a little awkward to fill up multiple hydration bags and water bottles, and also had difficulty handling it when there was a shallow stream. It was hard to keep the intake off of the bottom and hold the bag and pump at the same time.

68% praised for its fast water flow rate
I was very satisfied with the speed of the water flow of the Katadyn filter during my hike through the Zion Narrows.
I filtered about 10 gallons of water per day without any issues.
I was impressed with the speed of the water flow, which is useful for filling water bottles and hydration packs.
87% liked its ability to filter large quantities of water
I compared the weight of two different water filters, Sawyer and Katadyn Hiker, and carried the Katadyn Hiker because it was lighter.
The size and weight of the filter are acceptable for my preference. If it were any bigger, it would not work for me.
I prefer the Sawyer system over the Katadyn Hiker because it weighs only 5.2 oz compared to 14.3 oz.
I am willing to carry a few extra ounces for a sturdy design and years of use.
The accessibility of the filter fibers makes it easy for me to clean the filter and prolong the flow rate substantially compared to more sealed filter systems.
I compared the filter to a top brand lifestraw and found that it filters to a smaller micron level and filters more water over its total lifespan.
