My favorite new firestarter is the beeswax mod.
I keep a few of these fire starters in my backpack and emergency 10-essentials dayhike kit, indicating their durability for carrying around.
The product is easier to store and carry than the old cotton ball with petroleum jelly trick, and works as well if not better.
I suggest storing the product in a zip lock or similar container to prevent moisture.

When I spread it open, the product lights up quickly and can be compacted to about half size.
These work brilliantly as an emergency tinder source. They are easy to use and ignite with sparks from a ferro rod or a quick touch of flame from a lighter. They burn for a good long time (2 minutes or so).

These fire starters are compact and work better than cotton balls because they can fluff one end to catch the spark and burn slowly on the other end, giving more time for other tinder and kindling to catch fire.
I have never needed to use more than one fire starter as they stay dry in the pouch.
