About Cold Steel Viking Battle Axe - Black
Overall Feedback:
78% positive
79% praised the sharp and durable blade, while 21% found it needed frequent sharpening
The blade quality is good as I accidentally slammed the axe into the dirt where a rock was, but there was no dent in the blade.
I tested the blade by slamming it full force into the dirt where a rock was, and to my surprise, there was not even a small dent in the blade.
I sharpened the blade until it was shaving sharp, which is too sharp for a wood axe. I use this axe for martial arts training and trick cutting against water bottles and other human analog targets, not repeatedly against cured hard woods.
The long blade of the axe-hatchet leaves little room for inaccuracy.
78% praised the rugged and reliable construction, though 22% experienced damage
I tested the quality of the axe by cutting down some standing dead oak and birch with it. It did fine at full force and nothing came loose or chipped.
The steel on these axes is surprisingly hard with multiple layers of heat treat and is tempered well.
I tested the quality of the axe by cutting down some standing dead oak and birch with it. It did fine at full force, and nothing came loose or chipped. Being a big guy and having cut firewood my whole life, I feel like I am a pretty good judge of the quality of axes.
I found that the steel is well heat treated with multiple layers and surprisingly hard.
The axe head is of high quality for the price, but I had to drill out the screw that was in too far.
There are no major flaws in the head or handle, the blade has a hardy weather proof coating, and the grain is straight.
The axe head is of high quality for the price, but I had to drill out the screw that was in too far.
I regret not spending more money for better quality. It seems I am not satisfied with the build quality of the product.
81% appreciated the built-in safety features, although 19% found them insufficient
The handle pole is thickly protected with a lacquer that prevents the axe head from going up the handle upon initial assembly attempt, which could be a safety concern.
The axe head on both axes is extremely loose and not safe to use. I'm not looking for a DIY project to make it safe right out of the box.

84% liked the easy maintenance
Sharpening the blade is easy and it holds an edge for months, indicating easy maintenance.
I straightened the sides of the haft with filing and rasping, which made it fit tighter and more stable with no wobble.
80% liked the comfortable and balanced handle
The axe handles nicely in one or both hands and can be used to fell even small trees.
I am satisfied with the axe. The wood is a bit longer than expected, but still small enough for one hand or extra for both hands.
The edge sharpens easily and the steel is of good quality. I had to remove the rolled over bur and sharpen it with a medium grit stone. The black coating will wear off with use.
I have complained that the blade is less than expected, as dull as a butter knife.
