About Cold Steel Spike Hawk Frontier Hawk One Size
Overall Feedback:
80% positive
82% praised the sharp and durable blade, while 18% found it needed frequent sharpening
The edge sharpens easily and the steel is of good quality. I had to remove the rolled over bur and sharpen it with a medium grit stone. The black coating will wear off with use.
The edge of the hawk sharpens easily and the steel is good, but the black coating will wear off with use. Also, I plan to modify the head as it only has a single pin hole.
I noticed rust on the blade edge and it is dull.
79% praised the rugged and reliable construction, though 21% experienced damage
I am dissatisfied with the handle of the axe/hawk. The grain of the wood is perpendicular to the cutting edge, which means it will break faster. The wood is super soft and a few light throws at a soft pine made the head peel and dig up, indicating that the handle tends to splinter.
The axe head has some play in it, making it difficult to throw and likely to break with repeated use.
I find the cosmetic quality of the product somewhat disappointing, but I am still using it.
I have complained about the poor build quality of the axe/hawk handle. The grain is perpendicular to the cutting edge, making it prone to breakage. Additionally, the wood is too soft and tends to splinter.
The ax head seems to have some play in it and is not very secure, which will surely lead to breakage with repeated use.
I find the cosmetic quality of the product somewhat disappointing, but I have accepted it.
76% liked the comfortable and balanced handle
I filed the sharp metal down so that it doesn't ruin the handle again and slips on nicer.
The axe-hatchet is fairly long, but still light enough to use one-handed. It is also fairly comfortable to use when choked up on it like a knife.
The axe is fairly long, yet light enough to use one-handed. It is also comfortable when choked up on, making it more like a knife.
82% appreciated the lightweight and compact design, although 18% found it too heavy
If I were camping or hiking with it, the shorter handle might be more attractive, but even then the long handle would be easy to strap to the side of a pack so I could have both.
During lengthy use, the axe is so heavy that it burns my arm out and I need to choke up on the handle.
86% appreciated the built-in safety features, although 14% found them insufficient
I prefer the lightweight elegance of the frontier hawk, which is also a very powerful striker and arrived sharp.
The tomahawk is a workhorse with some safety features like the 1055 carbon steel drop forged head, but it has drawbacks such as being prone to rust and needing paint/stain for the handle to hold up to the elements.
86% liked the easy maintenance
Applying a beeswax coating on the ash handle can help with long-lasting weather proofing and grip.
I found this axe to be a fun project and a good way to add more value to my axe. It shows that the axe is easy to maintain, work with, and can be customized to suit my individual needs.
The edge sharpens easily and the steel is of good quality. I had to remove the rolled over bur and sharpen it with a medium grit stone. The black coating will wear off with use.
I doubt the axe's ability to kill a large bear before it kills me, but it would be better than using my fists if the bear spray misses.
