About 1844 Helko Werk Germany Traditional Rheinland Pack Axe
Overall Feedback:
74% positive
72% praised the sharp and durable blade, while 28% found it needed frequent sharpening
I have found that the blade holds an edge very well and can cut through maple decently.
When the axe is wet, the geometry of the blade makes it super sticky requiring massive head speed to get into the wedge portion of the design.
The more I looked at it from different angles, the more I was in awe of its poor forging and mounting to its handle.
65% liked the easy maintenance, but 35% found it required frequent sharpening
The new axe is much better.
The quality of the axe is superb, but I faced an issue while using it. I was able to get the head to loosen up a bit while prising it back out of the round, but a few smacks of the end of the handle snugged it back up without any persistent looseness.
I suggested wrapping the strike plate in leather to keep it in place and asked if liquid nailing it on would be necessary.
67% liked the comfortable and balanced handle, but 33% found it slippery
The handle of the ax is thick and takes a little getting used to, but it makes the weight of the head seem negligible.
68% appreciated the lightweight and compact design, although 32% found it too heavy
I am hoping to use this axe as a moderately priced work axe for hiking and backpacking because it is portable.
For just camping ground use, I suggest a heavier head/spitting axe.
65% appreciated the built-in safety features
The axe heads are exact with the specifications given, indicating good safety features.
I spent about an hour and a half filing the edge of the blade into a blade. I also spent about half an hour honing the blade with an ax sharpening puck and it is still not sharp like I want it yet. Based on my experience, the blade was sharp enough to make a decent hammer. However, I have faced this problem personally and would like to express my negative feedback regarding the blade quality.
The edges are sharp and the tangs are thick, indicating good blade quality.
