The balaclava provides adequate protection for outdoor exercise when nobody is around and is more breathable than a mask.
I had the previous model of this sun mask which was uncomfortable to breathe in, but this new version is much better. The two layers are only attached at the very ends, which means there is a gap between the layers that extends for most of the length. The top layer covers the nose, mouth, and chin only, and since it is short, the breath can escape the mask easily. It does not cling to the nose, unless I am breathing heavily like on a run.
I can breathe without any restriction while wearing the balaclava.
