The cleaner has enough suction to pick up gravel from the sandy bottom, perfect for cleaning it.
I was able to clean the whole tank with the aquarium gravel cleaner, which worked fantastically with just the right suction power. Only a little less than a gallon of water was removed.
This aquarium gravel cleaner has higher quality features such as smooth, clear, thickish but flexible tubing, a suction cup to keep it in the collection bucket, a clamp to assist in starting the suction, a high quality squeeze bulb, and the ability to adjust the length of the hard-ended wand section that stays in the tank. It also has two different suction end pieces.
The siphon effectively removed remnants of substrate from the tank, even though I had previously removed it.
